Summary of Survey Results from the 3/17/2001 "No Man's Land" Outreach

·         The largest constituent of adult residents in “No Man’s Land” is between the ages of 21 and 35 years (62.35%).  Approximately 90% of the residents are between the ages of 21 and 50 years. 

·         Households are composed of single males (40.70%) or couples (36.05%).  23.26% of households are composed of single females.

·         Residents are predominantly Black (46.15%) or Latino/Hispanic (38.46%).

·         94% of the residents in this area are renters.

·         62% have been residing in this area between 1 and 3 years.  25% have been residents for less than one year.

·         Residents are split on feelings of safety.  40.24% of the residents agree that their neighborhood is a safe place to live while 48.78% disagree.

·         Majority of residents (63.29%) worry about the safety of their property when they are away from home.

·         Majority of residents (64.63%) worry about their personal safety when in their neighborhood.

·         Residents identified the following problems:

·         Shooting & other violence (26.14%)

·         Cars being stolen or vandalized (18.67%)

·         People breaking/sneaking into homes (18.26%)

·         Drug Dealing (17.01%)

·         People being robbed or attacked (13.69%)

·         Loitering (3.32%)

·         Gangs (2.07%)

·         Prostitution (0.83%)

·         While the majority of residents have not been victims of crime in the past two years, 38.75% of residents were victims.

·         In the past two years, the following crimes were perpetrated against residents:

·         Vehicle B&E (24.39%)

·         Home Burglary and Armed/unarmed Robbery (21.95%)

·         Larceny of Property (14.63%)

·         Assault and car/house shot at (4.88%)

·         Auto theft and vandalism and hit and run (2.44%)

·         Majority of residents (54.32%) rated police protection as good and (34.57%) as fair

·         Majority of residents (66.23%) agree that the residents can do more to reduce crime.

·         Majority of residents (54.43%) are not familiar with Police and PAC programs.

·         Majority of residents (88%) have not participated in police or PAC programs.

 

Age Group:

Analysis of Crime Concerns:

·         Shootings & other violence was the primary concern of all age groups

·         Cars being stolen or vandalized was ranked No. 2 for residents between 21 and 35 years of age, while Drug dealing was ranked No. 2 for residents aged 36 to 50 years.

Analysis of Crimes Experienced:

·         Residents between 21 and 35 years of age were primarily victims of armed/unarmed robbery while residents between the ages of 36 and 50 were primarily victims of Vehicle B&E

·         Home burglary ranked second as the crime experienced by residents between the ages of 21 and 50.

·         Larceny of property ranked third as the crime experienced by residents between ages 21 and 50.

 

Sex:

Analysis of Crime Concerns:

·         Shootings and other violence was the primary concern regardless of sex.

·         Males were concerned about drug dealing and people being robbed and attacked.

·         Females were concerned about cars being stolen, drug dealing and home burglary.

·         Couples were concerned about Home and car break in, Drug dealing, robbery and prostitution.

Analysis of Crimes Experienced:

·         Males primarily experienced armed/unarmed robbery.  Vehicle B&E and Home Burglary ranked second and third, respectively.

·         Females primarily experienced Vehicle B&E and Larceny of Property.  Home burglary, Assault and Vandalism were tied for second.

·         Couples primarily experienced Home Burglary.  Larceny of property and shots fired at house/car ranked second.

 

Race:

Analysis of Crime Concerns:

·         Shootings and other violence was the primary concern of all races.

·         Drug dealing was ranked second by Blacks and Whites.  Latinos ranked Car burglary second.

·         Blacks and Latinos ranked home break in third while Whites ranked car break in third.

Analysis of Crimes Experienced:

·         Blacks primarily experienced Larceny of property.  Home burglary, Vehicle B&E and Shots fired at car/house tied for second.

·         Latinos primarily experienced armed/unarmed robbery.  Latinos also experienced Home burglary, Vehicle B&E and Larceny of Property.

·         Whites were targeted for Home Burglary and Vehicle B&E only.

 

Other observations and problems identified by participants:

·         Unemployment issues among Latinos

·         Increased prevalence of gang activity

·         Significant number of children in households

·         Housing issues – lack of appliances/safety concerns

·         Health issues


Summary of Survey Results for Green Street

 

·         Residents are distributed over the different age groups.  However, the majority of residents are over 36 years of age.

·         60% of the households are composed of couples.

·         Majority of residents (68.75%) are Black.

·         100% of residents are renters.

·         All residents have been living in the area for more than 1 year.

·         Majority of residents (56.25%) feel that the neighborhood is not a safe place to live.

·         Majority of residents (73.33%) worry about the safety of their property when away from home.

·         Majority of residents (66.67%) worry about personal safety when in the neighborhood.

·         Residents identified the following problems:

·         Shootings & other violence and people breaking/sneaking into homes (22.58%)

·         Drug Dealing (19.35%)

·         Cars being stolen or vandalized (14.52%)

·         Loitering and Gangs (8.06%)

·         People being robbed and attacked (4.48%)

·         31.25% of residents were victims of crime in the past two years.

·         The following crimes were perpetrated against residents:

·         Home Burglary (40%)

·         Vehicle B&E and shots fired at car/house (20%)

·         Assault and Larceny of property (10%)

·         Majority of residents (87.50%) agree that police protection is good.

·         Majority of residents (87.50%) agree that residents can do more to reduce crime.

·         Majority of residents (62.50%) are familiar with Police and PAC programs.

·         Majority of residents (86.67%) have not participated in Police and PAC programs.


Summary of Survey Results for Macon Street

 

·         Residents are predominantly between the ages of 21 and 35 years (81.82%).

·         41.67% of the households are composed of single males.  Only 8.33% of households are composed of single females.

·         Majority of residents (61.54%) are Latino/Hispanic.  None of the residents are White.

·         100% of residents are renters.

·         70% of the residents have been living in the area for less than 3 years.  None of the residents have lived here for more than 6 years.

·         Majority of residents (50%) agree that the neighborhood is a safe place to live.  Only 25% of residents feel that the neighborhood is unsafe.

·         Small majority of residents (58.33%) worry about the safety of their property when away from home.

·         Small majority of residents (58.33%) worry about personal safety when in the neighborhood.

·         Residents identified the following problems:

·         Shootings & other violence and people breaking/sneaking into homes (27.59%)

·         Cars being stolen or vandalized (24.14%)

·         People being robbed or attacked (10.34%)

·         Prostitution (6.90%)

·         Drug Dealing (3.45%)

·         27.27% of residents were victims of crime in the past two years.

·         The following crimes were perpetrated against residents:

·         Home Burglary and Vehicle B&E and Auto Theft (33.33%)

·         Majority of residents (58.33%) agree that police protection is good.

·         Majority of residents (63.64%) agree that residents can do more to reduce crime.

·         45.45% are familiar with Police and PAC programs while 45.45% are unfamiliar.

·         None of the residents have participated in Police and PAC programs.


Summary of Survey Results for Orient Street

 

·         Residents are distributed over the different age groups.

·         58.33% of the households are composed of couples.

·         Majority of residents (50%) are White.

·         81.82% of residents are renters; however 18.18% are homeowners.

·         Majority of residents have lived in the area for 3 years or more.  Also, 33.33% have lived in the area for 6 years or more.

·         Majority of residents (75%) agree that the neighborhood is a safe place to live.

·         Majority of residents (75%) are not worried about the safety of their property when away from home.

·         Residents are split (50/50) over worries about personal safety when in the neighborhood.

·         Residents identified the following problems:

·         Shootings & other violence (33.33%)

·         People being robbed or attacked and Cars being stolen or vandalized (20%)

·         Drug dealing and People breaking/sneaking into homes (13.33%)

·         28.57% of residents were victims of crime in the past two years.

·         The following crimes were perpetrated against residents:

·         Home Burglary and Hit and run (50%)

·         Majority of residents (71.43%) agree that police protection is good.

·         Majority of residents (75%%) agree that residents can do more to reduce crime.

·         Majority of residents (62.50%) are familiar with Police and PAC programs.

·         Majority of residents (66.67%) have not participated in Police and PAC programs.


Summary of Survey Results for West Trinity Street

 

·         73.81% of residents are between the ages of 21 and 35 years.

·         Majority of the households (54.76%) are composed of single males.  Only 16.67% of households are composed of couples.

·         Majority of residents (53.49%) are Latino/Hispanic.

·         97.56% of residents are renters.

·         Majority of residents have been living in the area between 1 and 3 years with 40% of residents living in the area for less than 1 year.

·         Majority of residents (58.54%) feel that the neighborhood is not a safe place to live.

·         Majority of residents (66.67%) worry about the safety of their property when away from home.

·         Majority of residents (71.43%) worry about personal safety when in the neighborhood.

·         Residents identified the following problems:

·         Shootings & other violence (26.83%)

·         Drug Dealing (20.33%)

·         People being robbed or attacked and Cars being stolen or vandalized (18.70%)

·         People breaking/sneaking into homes (13.82%)

·         Loitering (1.63%)

·         40.48% of residents were victims of crime in the past two years.

·         The following crimes were perpetrated against residents:

·         Armed/unarmed Robbery (42.86%)

·         Larceny of Property (23.81%)

·         Vehicle B&E (19.05%)

·         Home Burglary (9.52%)

·         Assault (4.76%)

·         Majority of residents 48.78% agree that police protection is fair.

·         Majority of residents (53.66%) agree that residents can do more to reduce crime.  However, 39.02% disagree.

·         Majority of residents (69.23%) are not familiar with Police and PAC programs.

·         94.87% or residents have not participated in Police and PAC programs.
