PAC 2 Resources Available to the Community

Information Initiatives:

  • Listserv: PAC 2 has an electronic mailing list that allows residents, law enforcement and city officials to communicate about issues related to PAC business. The listserv is also used to announce the monthly meeting agenda, and to post minutes from each PAC meeting.

  • Website: The PAC2 website serves as repository of information for residents of district 2. Here the public can see results of outreach programs, obtain minutes from past monthly PAC gatherings, PAC representatives' meetings with the city and county officials and learn more about upcoming events and resources available to the community in electronic form.

  • AutoDialer: The autodialer is a computer-based system that enables neighborhoods to send out mass phone calls to residents for the purposes of meeting announcements and crime alerts. It is located in the District 2 substation at Northgate Mall. Contact Crime Prevention Officer Eric Hester for more information, 560-4582.

  • Crime Information E-mails: Several times a week, an automated crime report is posted to the listserv, documenting calls made by officers to a crime scene within the district. You must be on the PAC2 listserv to receive this report.

Traffic

  • Speed Trailer: This device, administered by the District 2 police officers, is used to monitor speed of traffic in a designated area. Neighborhoods can request that a particular street be monitored. To get on the list for the placement of the trailer, go to:

Safety and Prevention:

  • Neighborhood Watch: The Crime Prevention Officer is here to help residents organize neighborhoods in such way that it becomes harder for crime to persist within the community. Through the Neighborhood Watch Program this Officer will help educate the community at the block level about the best techniques to deter crime and create an active collaboration with the police. Contact Eric Hester to set up an appointment to begin the process on your block, 560-4582.

  • Operation Identification: is a voluntary vehicle registration program designed to deter auto theft and assist in the apprehension of auto thieves. Vehicle owners sign an agreement stating their vehicle is not normally driven between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. If a police officer observes the vehicle being driven during these hours, they may stop the vehicle and verify that the vehicle owner or a person designated by the owner is operating the vehicle. Learn more about Operation ID.

  • Street Lights: PAC works with the city to ensure that streets that have inadequate lighting receive additional ones. Crime cannot hide in well-lit places. PAC's approach is to determine which areas in the district need the most focus, then pull all requests together and forward them as a list to the Community Liaison Officer, Tony Scott. To request street lights, go to:

    .

  • Beacon Lights: These Emergency Beacons function as ordinary light bulbs, but with a quick couple of flicks of the light switch they begin to flash on and off. This ‘flashing beacon’ brings attention to your residence and assists Emergency Personnel in finding you along with alerting your neighbors that there is an emergency at your home. You can access the beacon request form here.

Neighborhood appearance:

  • Graffiti removal: The Durham Police Department's DRAGON Gang Investigation Unit has set up an e-mail address for people to report gang graffiti that needs to be removed and to report any gang-related criminal activity. The e-mail address is: gangunit@ci.durham.nc.us. DRAGON investigators will check e-mail every day they are on duty. Investigators ask that specific locations and a brief description of the graffiti be included in the e-mails. Police officers and members of the city's Impact Team remove graffiti as quickly as possible. Investigators document the graffiti before it is removed. Phone: Gang Unit 560-1133
    Report Truancy: 560-0900

  • Housing code violations: Several departments and programs in the city of Durham are working with PAC to help rein in landlords and property owners that allow their dwellings to become substandard, facilitating their development into havens for crime and instability.
